A Heartbreaking Finish

Today was another football matchup for my girls school. Looking at the stats from the season, it was going to be a tough game.

I was late getting to the game as I was tied up. I arrived early in the second quarter to our team being down 28-0 already.

Things didn’t get any better for the home squad, but it was still fun seeing all the support with a decent crowd there to cheer them on. Unlike their last home game, they did at least score a touchdown but in the end, it was 48-6 for Waterdown who were able to throw and run the ball with ease.

One of the coaches hung outside the school doors for awhile as the kids came out, and gave them a fist bump of support. The players looked pretty dejected – understandably so – because I think this meant they would not qualify for playoffs. There is some pretty stiff competition anyway, but it’s always fun to at least be part of postseason play.

This might be the last football game I take in on these hallowed grounds. I know the junior boys team will play in the spring, but we wouldn’t likely know any of these players.

It does make me sad as I take in these ‘lasts’, but in the end I am grateful for this opportunity at 50 years old, to be able to relive my teen years in a way, through walking these halls and looking over at the home bench, remembering those moments I eagerly anticipated the moment I would get called to head out on that field of battle.

It’s a shame. There’s so much property at this site for expansion. They also have four ball diamonds to their new home sites’ zero.

C’est la vie, I guess.
