The World Beyond Anxiety’s Borders

This morning, my sister left for her first tropical vacation. Her and her partner are traveling to Cancun, Mexico and she couldn’t be more ecstatic.

My sister has also suffered from a lifetime of anxiety which has held her back from trying things. This year, however, has been transformational for her including finally getting her passport and making this plunge into the skies to unknown experiences.

I remember when Tara and I both took our first trips off of this continent together. We went to Cuba and I remember one night as we enjoyed drinks at the resort dance club, watching so many young people having the time of their lives and thinking, why did we wait this long to travel?

Before she left, my sister was talking about possibly going to England in the new year. It’s wonderful to see her happy, healthy, and full of wonder for the worlds beyond our borders whether it’s the warm walls of our homes, or the imaginary ones that separate our countries.

Everyone should have the opportunity to immerse themselves into a culture so very different from our own to both help us realize how small our nook within the greater world is, and how similar all of our basic needs and desires are.

I hope to venture upward and outward again in the near future. Our Cuba trip was in 2018. 5 years ago. It seems like a lifetime. We got engaged while we were there, making it that much more memorable. How could we top that off?

I’m wishing my little ‘sis and her girlfriend a safe but amazing time. To steal a line from one of my favorite Robin Williams films, ‘Don’t let your arms get tired.’ Better that one, than ‘What if it’s the pilot’s time to go.’
