Our Civic Baseball Duty

It’s the Civic Holiday here in Canada. This is recognized as a municipal holiday and probably one of the most confusing holidays we celebrate – or don’t. Not everyone gets it off, but the company we work for gives us the day for its Ontario division. Here is an explanation as to how it’s celebrated differently by Province and even by cities who have different names for this day such as Simcoe Day in Toronto.

Whatever you want to call this day, either way I used this opportunity to get caught up on laundry and do a little writing before getting back into the swing of baseball again this evening with a night at the batting cages.

The weather wasn’t looking promising for baseball, but we went anyway and other than a few drops of rain for 5 minutes, it turned out to be a nice night to clobber some balls, followed by a little bumper car action for those that could stick around.

It’s nice to see the kids together in this kind of relaxed setting where there is lot’s of opportunity to just hang out. It was also a chance for the parents to talk. We discussed how the games went while we were away, and some strategy and things to watch out for during the playoffs.

It’s hard to believe that baseball playoffs will start next week. If we win tomorrow, we will finish second place meaning that if we win that game, we are greenlighted to the finals. If not, we have one more chance the following week to play for all the marbles.

It is my hope that one year before our girls age out, that they can know the feeling of that final victory after a long, hard-fought season.

Let this be that year.
