Finding Pride Again On Canada Day

When I was a school Trustee, at the end of the month there was an update by our Chair and the board’s Director. Both speeches celebrated the positive outcomes across our organization since the last update. At one point, I suggested that we reflect on the things that our organization needed to improve upon. Nothing happened with that recommendation, but it seemed like a good way to ensure the communities we served knew that the issues important to them were on our radar and what we were doing to address their concerns.

On Canada Day, I saw a post on Twitter from one of our federal leaders that struck a nerve.

“Today on Canada Day, we have much to reflect on. We must continue to acknowledge the history of colonialism and its lasting impacts on Indigenous Peoples. While moving to right the wrongs of the past and work towards justice, together. … We’ve seen an increase in hate across the country …“

Jagmeet Singh

There it was. The reflection of the work needed to be done. I thought about my suggestion years ago.

As elected officials, we spend every waking hour talking about the issues. About the need to do more – how we are failing those we represent.

I hated Canada Day for a while. I was ashamed of our past. Although it’s not perfect – no country’s past is – I have found pride in my home land again.

We are being fed this negativity from our leaders all year long – especially our kids in every class they take in school. I now want us to just celebrate what is beautiful about our country on Canada Day, because what other day do we get to turn off the anger?

When everyday is a reminder, find a moment to see the beauty.
