With Monday being a statutory holiday here in Canada, T-Ball was played tonight and because of a shortage of volunteers, I was also voluntold for the position of convenor of this division.
I was there early enough to go around to all the teams to make sure they had the equipment they needed, and made a handful of trips back to our clubhouse for tools, helmuts, and such.
I was grumbling about another night at the diamond. I do love it here. This association is like family, but when a quiet winter first turns into a hectic summer, it takes me a bit to get into the groove.
I love going around talking to coaches and families. This is also the cutest and funniest division so it’s good for the spirit to witness the hilarity of freshman chaos. I mean, whoever’s idea it first was to put tykes on a big pile of enticing sand with the intention to get them to concentrate on balls being batted and thrown at them, had to have a maniacal side to them.
With volunteerism down, it adds that much more confusion. Being involved in this division really is all about telling kids to get out of the dirt, and to watch the ball. It’s tiring, but the biggest task at this age.
Once everything was running smoothly, I was asked to do the 50/50 draw which means walking around the park selling tickets. I hate selling things too but once I got going, I ended up having a lot of great conversations with parents and I even received the best hugs from a puppy. Telling someone they won and handing over wads of cash isn’t a bad gig either. It’s a good way for the convenor to get to know the parents.
