Passion Over Pleasure

How old were you when you had your first job? I was 12 when I started refereeing minor hockey, followed by a paper route at 14, and McDonalds at 15.

My eldest has been wanting to work for some time now and the perfect opportunity presented itself a couple of weeks ago, for a summer job combining a few of Emma’s passions, and something in line with her future plans of being a junior elementary teacher. She did a co-op placement last semester and both excelled at it, and loved the work. The kids loved her too. They always do. She has a special way of connecting with them.

I picked her up from school, we grabbed a snack on the way, and arrived 45 minutes early. She was quite nervous. She had met the interviewer on Zoom last week so the fact that she was getting an opportunity for a second interview seemed promising to me. What do I know though. I haven’t applied for a job in over 25 years. Well, a different position once. Isn’t that sad?

We started to roam a bit before another worker came and took us on a tour of the site. Emma ended up going for the same tour with the program head who also saw her a half hour early since she was there.

I am sad at the thought of her not joining us for our yearly camping trip but she seems really excited about this opportunity and what a perfect, fun way to spend her summer. Maybe it won’t be relaxing with a book on the dock of a lake, but she can spend weekends with my sister at our trailer. She would just be swapping the lake out for a pond. Both have turtles so there is that.
