In yesterday’s post, I mentioned that I realized around 11 PM last night, that I had missed a couple of these mini exercises along the way so I stayed up to finish them seeing as though our online log grading was to be done today – in which I got 100% so that last minute push paid off.
Here is one of them:
Show, Don’t Tell (250 words max)
- Your perspective is that of someone (a character) who is already inside the room and observes what happens:
- You may not use the word “angry” or any synonym or phrase that means angry;
My Submission
I hear a key jam into the lock, and seconds later the apartment door bursts open. Where was I going to hide? I feel the intentional thud of Stefan’s boots echo down the hallway. My heart is pounding and my breath labored, but I try to remain quiet and still as I peer through the horizontal slats from within the dark, confined closet. Trevor and I had been discreet about our affair, but the desperate and commanding tone of Stefan’s voice as he called out my name as he barreled down the hall, left me no other conclusion than to believe that we had been found out. It broke my heart that I had been unfaithful to Stephan. I loved him with all of my heart. He was my first boyfriend and he had been so patient with me as I sorted out my sexuality, but then I heard Trevor sing at Wednesday karaoke night and I lost all control of my impulses.
I’ll share the other exercise submission tomorrow where the actual assignment was about a hallway. I chuckled after having just written a piece that started in a hallway.
These exercises are quite fun.
