So much of what defines a writer is their passion for research. Regardless of what genre we are working in – whether a nonfiction novel, a newspaper article, a children’s book, or poetry – research plays a large role within this craft.
A great artist is curious about the world around them. People, nature, animals, and history are fascinating. Our next painting, book, movie, or poem is inspired by a child’s laughter on a train, driving through the scenic mountains, listening to the melodic rhythm of the rain dancing on the rooftop, or in a news story that sparks a deep and fluent stream of thoughts.
I had caught a Tweet earlier today from Yusuf / Cat Stevens. I only know the artist from the song Father & Son. I had never seen ‘Yusuf’ in front of his name. Apparently he converted to Isam in 1977.
The message from Yusuf was a recognition that this week was a rare alignment of holiday’s from three different faiths; Passover – a Jewish holiday celebrating the Israelites’ escape from slavery in Egypt as depicted in the Bible, Ramadan – a Muslim holiday that celebrates the prophet Muhammad’s first revelation, where he was visited by the Angel Jibril who revealed to him the beginnings of what would later become the Qur’an, and Easter, which is a Christian holiday celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Mr. Stevens stated in his Tweet that this was a chance to share in a sense of harmony, cooperation, and peace – dreaming of the world as one. Sounds like one of my favorite John Lennon songs.
This alignment of faith is a true opportunity to see how our joint humanity transcends our religious beliefs.
Regardless of what you celebrate this weekend, I wish you and your loved ones an abundance of happiness, peace, and good health.
