Let’s Play Ball

I have some things I both need and want to write about, so perhaps I can use this space to toss out early snippets of those pieces.

The first assignment is for the baseball league where I both coach and am a member of their executive committee. I said I would write something to encourage parents or community members at large to volunteer with our association.

This season will be my eleventh year coaching with this organization and my second as an executive member. It’s been a joy watching both my kids and this league grow over the past decade. From laughing as the tykes all chase after the same ball to marvelling at home runs hit into the other diamond or a throw from deep in the outfield to home plate to get the runner out. What a pleasure having been a witness to the passion so many kids carry for the game. Both from those I have coached, or whose talents I admired from from the opposing bench.

Over those years, we have also saw many dedicated volunteers come and go and when they leave us, they take a piece of our association with them. From the funny play-by-play from John on the loudspeakers at our annual fireworks display, or Annemarie there every night keeping those dogs and burgers coming.

Between our longest serving executive members, they have a combined 70+ years of serving our community, and all of them are there six days a week. When they aren’t at the park, they are keeping an eye on the sales for the food for the canteen, going to various places to procure these items, making up bags of candy to sell each week, and planning everything from tournaments to picnics, and our annual fun day.
