It was the summer of ‘85. There was an ambulance strike and my best friend and I were playing one-on-one tackle football in his backyard. Best friend. Ha. The fvcker broke my leg.
It was a fluke of course and after three months of being in a full-leg cast, I was able to zip around the corner to his house in nothing flat.
In the early cast days however, I spent a lot of time in the basement with my mom that summer watching television and somehow found myself addicted to Days of Our Lives. Jenn and Frankie to be precise. The artist and his beautiful muse.
I would watch the early afternoon serial for many years with mom, who taped it religiously on her VCR. She still does to this day having kept up with the Joneses; mastering the art of PVR’s. I am pretty sure when I moved out on my own in my late teens, I may have recorded the show but you are the only ones who know so let’s keep that between us.
Yesterday I read the news of John Aniston’s death. John played Victor Kiriakis for 37 years on Days of Our Lives from 1985 to present day. Although you loved to hate his villainous character, Victor was also a devout family man so there was always a soft spot for the good side that occasionally surfaced.
John of course was the real life dad to one of my favourite 90’s sitcom stars, Jennifer Aniston of Friends fame. Jenn shared a few pics of her and her dad on her Instagram account yesterday. I’m thinking of John’s real life and Days of Our Lives families.
A Tweeter shared this mash-up of footage of John over the years. Some great old characters in these clips.
